Preparation: Using sandpaper having 500- to 600-grit to smoothen the tile surfacing. The surface should again be rinsed with normal water and leave it to dry for some time. Use a tack rag to eliminate the detached particles from the sanding process. Any areas on which you do not want paint should be taped off. Priming: Brush a layer of light grey primer on the tile surface. The primer must be specifically formulated for hard surfaces like tile. Give some time for the primer to dry. You can refer to the directions given by the manufacturer of the primer to get an accurate idea. If the tiles are darker, a second coat of primer needs to be applied. Before applying the first coat of paint, let the primer on the surface become dry.

Painting of tiles: The quality of the paint should be good and preferably use an oil-based paint. Apply two coats of paint using a roller or a brush. There should be sufficient time between the paint coats to allow for proper drying. Make sure to clean the areas with surplus paint with mineral spirits. Hardening of the paint surface can be done by coating it with a layer of urethane. Seal the whole area for extra protection. Leave it to dry. Make sure you wait at least 24 hours before using the kitchen surface.
